Stress: Effects on the body.
Stress isn’t just something that happens in your head — the effects reach almost every part of your body. Basically, stress is the way your body responds to potential dangers. When your brain notices a threat, it directs certain glands to release a flood of hormones that increase alertness, heart rate, blood flow to your muscles, and more.
Workplace stress is a major cause of depression and anxiety. It often can occur when there is a mismatch between the requirements of the role, your capabilities and resources and supports available. Everyone knows what stress feels like and we’ve probably all experienced it at some stage – at home, school or work, or while getting outside our comfort zone, but while this stress is normal if it is ongoing, it can become a problem.
“On the surface, stress might seem like a good way to kick-start productivity, but studies show that when we are under stress we can’t think as broadly, widely or deeply. Stress can increase motor function but it decreases perception, cognition and creativity.” – Beth Kuhel
